PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Authorities continued their investigation into a mass shooting at Brown University that left two students dead and nine others injured amid final exam preparations on Saturday afternoon, officials said Monday.
The shooting occurred about 4:05 p.m. Saturday inside the Barus and Holley Engineering Building, where students were attending a final review session ahead of examinations. The gunman, described in early reports as wearing dark clothing, opened fire inside a classroom before fleeing the scene.
Providence Police and the FBI are actively investigating the attack, but as of Monday no suspect has been publicly identified or charged in connection with the shooting.
Late Sunday, authorities released a man who had been detained as a “person of interest” after determining there was insufficient evidence to hold him, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley and Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said at a news conference. Officials stressed the investigation remains active and are seeking additional leads, including video footage from the public.
All of the known victims were students, Brown University President Christina Paxson said, though officials have only named one of the deceased so far. 19-year-old sophomore Ella Cook was identified by church leaders in her hometown during a memorial service Sunday.
Among the wounded, several remain hospitalized, with a mix of conditions ranging from stable to critical, according to authorities.
The university canceled remaining finals and class activities for the semester and allowed students to leave campus. A temporary shelter-in-place order that covered the school and surrounding neighborhoods was lifted early Sunday morning after the initial detention.
Officials have not disclosed a motive, the type of weapon used, or how the attacker entered or exited the building. Authorities are appealing to the public for help as the search continues.
Friends, classmates and community members gathered for vigils over the weekend to honor the victims and support each other amid the tragedy.
