Murder Arrest

Rochester, NY - On July 3rd, 2026, at approximately 11:50 am, officers were called to an apartment at 149 N. Union St. for the report of a possible person dead inside apartment #1. When officers arrived, they found the sole resident, 77-year-old Marc Stekloff, clearly deceased. The Medical Examiner’s Office advised the victim had been stabbed over three dozen times. Stekloff was found by a friend who went to check on him because he was not answering his phone.

The investigation by Major Crimes Homicide detectives revealed the following:

On the morning of 7/1/26, Marc Stekloff was bringing garbage cans in from the curb to his house. At that time, he had a brief, chance meeting with an individual walking in the area. It appears there was a brief, friendly exchange between the two. This was the last time Stekloff was seen alive. Shortly after this brief encounter, the suspect enters the Stekloffs residence, brutally assaults and stabs Stekloff, steals his car keys from inside the house and then flees in Stekloffs car that was parked out back.

On 7/4/26, Stekloff’s vehicle was found abandoned in a parking lot in the 1100 block of Hudson Ave. and recovered. With the assistance of both private video surveillance cameras and city blue light cameras, homicide detectives were able to identify the suspect as 34-year-old Jonathan Shearin from Dundee, N.Y.

Homicide detectives learned that Shearin was arrested in Wayne County on 7/2/26 for three separate home invasions in which six elderly victims were assaulted. Detectives believe that Shearin fled to Wayne County immediately after killing Stekloff. Shearin has remained in the Wayne County Jail since his July 2nd arrest.

The detectives, along with the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office, coordinated with Wayne County Sheriff's Sheriffs and Prosecutors' offices. Over the course of the last several months, the evidence gathered in the murder of Marc Stekloff was presented to a Monroe County Grand Jury. On Monday, 9/14/26, an indictment was unsealed in Monroe County Court charging Shearin with Murder in the 2nd Degree. He was remanded to the Monroe County Jail.

Shearing is a predicate felon who was out on Parole for previous burglary convictions at the time of all the aforementioned crimes in July.
