The Rochester Police Department on Tuesday launched a new recruitment campaign in response to a change in state law that raises the maximum age to take the police officer entrance exam from 35 to 43.
The new age limit significantly broadens the department’s recruitment pool, allowing individuals who may have previously believed they were too old to begin a law enforcement career to now apply.
“This is a game-changer,” said Rochester Police Chief David M. Smith in a statement. “Many people who thought it was too late to consider a career with the RPD now have a real opportunity to join our team and make a difference in their community.”
The department is actively encouraging individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those with prior military or professional experience, to consider applying. Officials say the department values candidates who bring life experience, maturity, and fresh perspectives to policing.
Applications for the next police exam are now open, with an application deadline of August 22.
