Rochester-Born Dr. Leonard Brock Returns for NeighborHOOD Tour and New Book Launch

Dr. Leonard M. Brock's story begins in Rochester's Hanover Housing Projects and on William Warfield Drive, but his work has taken him far beyond the city that shaped him.

Born and raised in Rochester, Brock earned his doctorate at 28 and went on to become a nationally recognized systems-change leader. His local leadership includes helping lead major education and anti-poverty initiatives, including ROC the Future and the Rochester-Monroe Anti-Poverty Initiative.

This August, Brock returns to Rochester for a limited homecoming and the launch of his new book, NeighborHOOD Scholar: A Tapestry of Scholarship, Systems and Self-Actualization.

His NeighborHOOD Tour will reconnect him with the people and places that shaped his journey while creating opportunities to engage with the residents, leaders, entrepreneurs, and young people shaping Rochester today.

At the heart of NeighborHOOD Scholar is a challenge to rethink how we view the intelligence and resilience developed in communities often defined by their challenges. Through concepts including Survival Calibration, Hood Literacy, and the Architecture of Integration, Brock argues that lived experience and cultural fluency are not deficiencies—but assets that can strengthen leadership and systems change.

The tour will include youth engagement, a community photo opportunity at the elementary school Brock attended, and the NeighborHOOD Book Launch Celebration on Monday, August 17, at Night Cap Blues, featuring community leaders, a motivational moment with Brock, book signing, music, cocktails, and Dr. Brock’s official birthday celebration.

The conversation continues Wednesday, August 19, at Our Place is Your Place with NeighborHOOD Talk with special guests, a community-centered discussion exploring the themes of NeighborHOOD Scholar through Q&A, audience engagement, book signing, and photos with Brock.

For Brock, this is more than a book tour. It is an opportunity to reconnect with the community that helped shape his understanding of systems change—and continue a conversation about how we recognize, invest in, and build with the "hidden jewels" already present in our neighborhoods.
