Sullivan Street Incident

Rochester, NY - Last night, just before 8pm, Officers conducted a traffic stop of a 2025 Jeep Compass on Sullivan Street for not having a front license plate. The vehicle had drawn Officers attention due to its suspected involvement in recent violence. Prior to the stop, Officers observed a white Hyundai Sonata as potentially being associated with the Jeep. During the traffic stop investigation, the Officers learned that the 21-year old operator, and sole occupant, did not have a valid license to operate the vehicle. The investigation led to the Officers having the operator sit in the back seat of the Police vehicle.

While he was sitting in the rear seat of the police vehicle, with his legs out, the Hyundai previously observed by Officers appeared from Joseph Avenue. The Hyundai turned onto Sullivan Street, going to wrong way on a one- way street, and accelerated towards the Officers. The Hyundai struck the rear open door of the Police vehicle, causing it to shut into the leg(s) of the male driver of the Jeep. Thankfully, the Officers were able to get out of the way and were not struck.

Additional Officers located the Hyundai on N. Clinton Avenue, near Ketchum Street, and attempted to stop it. The Hyundai fled and Officers pursued it for less than one minute, to the area of Seneca Avenue and Route 104, where the Hyundai crashed into a Mazda CX3. Immediately after the crash, the operator of the Hyundai ran from the scene. The operator of the Mazda, a 30-year old male, was transported to Strong Hospital with serious injuries. During the overnight period, Medical Staff advised Officers that the victim’s injuries are considered life threatening. The suspect driver, who ran from the scene, was able to evade Officers.

A short time later, Officers performing follow up tasks observed an ambulance on Weaver Street. In the back of the ambulance was a 21-year old male, who matched the description of the suspect, and was being treated for a head injury. Officers followed the ambulance to Rochester General Hospital, where they safely took him into custody in the parking lot. He was treated for non-life threatening injuries and transported to the Monroe County Jail.
