Rochester Animal Services is calling on the community to adopt and foster dogs ahead of upcoming renovations that will upgrade the facility with 60 new, larger kennels. These renovations are part of a significant capital investment that has already included improvements to animal care and visitor areas, and more.
The effort to clear the shelter will include a Free Dog Friday adoption event on Friday, June 12, and a Foster Information Session on Thursday, June 25.
Free Dog Friday on Friday, June 12
From Noon to 6 p.m. on Friday, June 12, dog adoption fees will be waived for approved adopters.
About 20 dogs – including fosters – are currently available for adoption at Rochester Animal Services, 184 Verona St. All will be spayed/neutered, vaccinated and microchipped as part of the adoption process. Dogs who have already been spayed or neutered can go home the same day. Interested adopters must bring a valid ID and a leash and collar. Foster Information Session on Thursday, June 25
Rochester Animal Services invites the community to learn more about fostering pets at an information session at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 25 at the Thomas P. Ryan R-Center, 530 Webster Ave.
Current volunteers will share their heartwarming experiences caring for foster pets, and the Rochester Animal Services team will walk through the process of how to join the approved foster network. Volunteers in the foster network can be contacted when foster opportunities arise during and beyond the renovation period.
“As we prepare for this renovation, we are doing what we always do – putting our animals first,” said Rochester Animal Services Director Staci Papadoplos. “These dogs deserve the comfort, stability, and love of a home, and we’re holding these events to help connect them with families before construction gets underway. As our available space becomes more limited in the coming weeks, every adoption and foster not only changes the life of a dog but also helps ensure we can continue serving animals in need throughout our community.”
“Doing something positive for your community doesn’t always come in the form of a new furry friend, but this time it does!” said Mayor Malik D. Evans. “I encourage everyone to consider adopting or fostering a dog from Rochester Animal Services, especially while the kennel renovations are underway.”
