Millions of Americans are expected to hit the roads and skies for Memorial Day weekend, and the Rochester region is preparing for one of the busiest travel periods of the year as the unofficial start of summer begins.

According to the American Automobile Association, approximately 45 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home during the Memorial Day holiday period, setting what could become a new holiday travel record. Of those travelers, roughly 39 million are expected to drive.
Despite rising fuel prices and ongoing economic concerns, travel demand remains strong nationwide.
“Travel demand remains strong, and despite higher fuel prices, many people are prioritizing leisure travel during holiday breaks,” AAA Vice President Stacey Barber said in the organization’s holiday forecast.
In the Rochester area, officials expect increased congestion on major highways including Interstate 490, Interstate 390, the New York State Thruway, and routes leading toward the Finger Lakes, Lake Ontario shoreline communities, and popular camping destinations throughout Western and Central New York.
Air travel is also expected to increase at Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport as families begin summer vacations and long holiday weekends. Airport officials have previously advised travelers to arrive early during peak travel periods due to increased passenger volume and ongoing roadway construction near airport access points.
Nationally, AAA estimates approximately 3.66 million travelers will fly over the holiday weekend. While gasoline prices have climbed sharply compared to last year, airfare for some domestic routes remains slightly lower for travelers who booked early.
Gas prices, however, remain a major concern for travelers. Recent national averages have climbed above $4 per gallon, with analysts pointing to international instability and oil market uncertainty as contributing factors.
Traffic experts warn that Thursday and Friday afternoons are expected to be the busiest times on the road nationwide, while Sunday is projected to be the lightest travel day before heavy return traffic resumes Monday.
Locally, Rochester will also host several Memorial Day observances and parades throughout Monroe County. The City of Rochester’s annual Memorial Day Parade is scheduled for Monday morning, with road closures expected downtown beginning around 10 a.m.
AAA and transportation officials are encouraging travelers to prepare for delays, monitor fuel levels, and allow additional time for airport security screening and highway traffic throughout the holiday weekend.
