Neighborhoods, Jobs & Housing Committee Chair Michael A. Patterson will host two hearings on legislation pertaining to the sale of School No. 20, as well as other school properties that could be reimagined in the future, as Rochester City Council continues to consider new avenues for unused Rochester City School District buildings.
“Since school buildings play a large role in City neighborhoods, I am encouraging City residents to play a larger role in Council’s decision-making process by telling us how these plans for reuse will impact them, their families and their neighbors,” Councilmember Patterson said.
The hearings will be held as follows:
Thursday, April 30 at 6:30 p.m. in the City Hall Atrium following the City Council work session.
Tuesday, May 5 at 6 p.m. following the regularly scheduled City Council Committee meetings in City Council Chambers.
The purpose of these hearings is to gauge public opinion on the proposed sale of School No. 20, as well as understand Rochesterians’ attitudes toward the use of defunct RCSD properties writ large. School No. 20, located at 54 Oakman Street and 7 Schauman Place, is currently proposed for sale to Young Women’s College Prep Charter School.
Young Women’s College Prep Charter School of Rochester established operations in August 2012 as an all-girls public school and currently operates on a single campus at 133 Hoover Drive in the Town of Greece, employing 60 staff members. If the sale is approved, YWCP plans to move all staff, students and operations from the Hoover Drive location to the facility at School No. 20.
Members of the public who wish to speak at either of the two hearings will be asked to place their name on a list at the hearings. No prior registration is required.
