Winter Driving

The month of November often brings the start of wintery weather. As this approaches, the Brighton Police Department reminds drivers to exercise caution on the roads. The first snowfall often brings an increase in motor vehicle accidents, so it's essential to take necessary precautions to stay safe. To avoid accidents, follow these guidelines:
Clear Your View: Make sure to fully clear frost, ice, and fog from all windows and mirrors before driving.
Reduce Speed: Lower your speed below the posted limit
Leave Space: Increase your normal following distance to 8 to 10 seconds behind other vehicles or snow plows to account for reduced traction.
Avoid Cruise Control: Never use cruise control on wet, icy, or snowy roads, as it can cause your tires to lose grip and spin.
Drive Smoothly: Accelerate, brake, and steer gradually and smoothly to avoid sudden movements that can cause tires to slide on black ice or packed snow.
Beware of Black Ice: Treat bridges, overpasses, and shaded highway ramps with caution, as they tend to freeze before regular pavement.
Give Snow Plows Space: Keep a safe distance from snow plows working to clear the lanes and avoid crowding or passing them.
