President Donald Trump leveled an explosive accusation against his predecessor this week, claiming without evidence that former President Barack Obama committed treason — a charge Obama swiftly and forcefully rejected.

In a post to his social media platform Monday, Trump alleged that Obama “committed treason against the United States” and suggested that new investigations should be launched. Trump did not provide details or documentation to support the claim.
“Treason is a very serious word,” Trump wrote. “What Obama did was far worse than Watergate. People need to wake up.”
The accusation comes as some of Trump’s supporters ramp up calls for transparency surrounding unsealed court documents and files related to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. In recent weeks, online communities backing Trump have pushed for broader disclosure of individuals connected to Epstein, who was charged with sex trafficking before his death in jail in 2019.
Trump has not directly connected Obama to Epstein in his statements, but his remarks have fueled speculation among far-right media outlets and social media influencers that high-profile Democrats may be implicated in wrongdoing.
Obama, through a spokesperson, denounced Trump’s comments as “dangerous political theater” and “an abuse of rhetoric with no grounding in fact.”
“This is just the latest in a string of unhinged accusations meant to distract from the former president’s own mounting legal troubles and political struggles,” said Eric Schultz, a senior adviser to Obama. “President Obama has always placed the country’s interests above politics — something Donald Trump clearly struggles to do.”
Legal experts noted that the charge of treason — as defined in the U.S. Constitution — is narrowly applied and requires actions such as waging war against the United States or aiding its enemies.
Obama has largely avoided direct engagement with Trump since leaving office in 2017, though he has occasionally spoken out on the importance of democratic institutions and rule of law.
