Special Hours and Programs at R-Centers to Keep Students and Families Engaged During Winter Break

The City of Rochester’s winter recreation season is underway through Feb. 28, featuring indoor and outdoor activities for youth and adults including ice skating, aquatics, sports training, crafts, and more.

 

“Don’t hibernate this winter – get to your neighborhood R-Center!” said Mayor Malik D. Evans. “Whether it’s after school or over a break week, our R-Centers and recreation facilities offer fantastic opportunities for kids and families to stay active and have fun year-round.”

 

During the upcoming December break, Monday, Dec. 22 through Friday, Jan. 2, R-Centers will have special hours. R-Centers will follow regular hours on weekends—see regular hours at www.CityofRochester.gov/R-Centers.

 

8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Weekdays, Dec. 22, 23, 29, 30, and Jan. 2; 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 24 and 31 (Breakfast and lunch served). The following four locations also offer R-Center Holiday Break Camp with games, sports, and creative activities for ages 6 to 12. Camp registration is required via www.CityofRochester.gov/R-Central

  • Trenton and Pamela Jackson R-Center, 485 N. Clinton Ave.

  • Frederick Douglass R-Center, 999 South Ave.

  • Adams Street R-Center, 85 Adams St.

  • Edgerton R-Center, 41 Backus St.

 

12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Weekdays, Dec. 22, 23, 29, 30, and Jan. 2; 12:30 to 3 p.m. Dec. 24 and 31 (Snack and lunch served):

  • Avenue D R-Center, 200 Ave. D

  • Hope R-Center, 524 Campbell St.

  • Carter Street R-Center, 500 Carter St.

  • Willie Walker Lightfoot R-Center, 271 Flint St.

  • David Gantt R-Center, 700 North St.

 

The Humbolt R-Center, 1045 Atlantic Ave, will host “After School in the Park” break week camp with limited enrollment available for the following dates: Dec. 22, 23, 24, 29, 30, and 31. Program hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day, except Dec. 24 and 31 which conclude at 4 p.m. The cost is $125 per week for City residents and $175 per week for non-City residents. Camp registration required via www.CityofRochester.gov/R-Central

 

Community members are also welcome to take a spin on the City’s ice rinks—indoors at the Genesee Valley Sports Complex (GVP), and outdoors at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park (MLK).

    • Adult Skate:

      • 10:30 to 11:45 a.m., Weekdays, Dec. 22, 23, 24, 26, 29, 30, 31 and Jan. 2;

    • Open Skate:

      • Noon to 1:15 p.m., Weekdays, Dec. 22, 23, 24, 26, 29, 30, 31 and Jan. 2;

      • 5 to 6:15 p.m., Saturdays, Dec. 27 and Jan. 3

      • 1 to 2:15 p.m. and 2:30 to 3:45 p.m. Sundays, Dec. 28 and Jan. 4

    • Skate & Shoot (Pick-Up Hockey Games):

      • 1:30 to 3 p.m., Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, Dec. 22 through Jan. 2;

      • 8 to 9:30 a.m. Sundays, Dec. 28 and Jan. 4 (Enhanced Skate & Shoot: Ages 40 and older)

    • Free Style Skate (For Figure Skating Only):

      • 1:30 to 3 p.m., Tuesdays, Dec. 23 and Jan. 30


  • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park

    • Open Skate:

      • Dec. 22, 23, 24, 29, 30 and Jan. 2, 3, and 4, 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., 3:40 to 5:10 p.m., 5:30 to 7 p.m., 7:20 to 9 p.m.

      • Friday, Dec. 26, 4 to 10 p.m.

      • Saturday, Dec. 27, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

      • Sunday, Dec. 28, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

      • New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31, 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., 3:40 to 5:10 p.m., 5:30 to 7 p.m. (Rink closes at 7 p.m.)

    • Adult Skate:

      • Dec. 22, 23, 24, 30 and Jan. 2, 3, and 4, 1:50 to 3:20 p.m.

    • Free Skate: Select skating sessions offer free admission and rentals during the Roc Holiday event series. For more information, visit: https://rocholidayvillage.com/free-ice-skating.

 

To escape the winter chill, community members can dive into the season’s aquatic offerings. For a full listing of hours and classes, visit www.CityofRochester.gov/aquatics. On all days when Jackson R-Center is open, special winter break swim sessions at include:

  • Senior swim: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

  • Open swim: 12 to 4 p.m.
