Reconnect Rochester’s Week Without Driving Challenge

ree

Rochester, NY — Reconnect Rochester is inviting Monroe County residents to participate in their local initiative for the National Week Without Driving which will take place Monday, September 29th - Sunday, October 5th.

Disability Rights Washington first launched the Week Without Driving in 2021 as a way to highlight the barriers faced by those without access to a car. By 2023, the challenge had expanded nationwide, encouraging individuals across the country to rethink their reliance on automobiles.

“The average commute in Rochester is 4.1 miles; a very doable distance for your average cyclist or a quick bus trip,” says Chaz Goodman, Marketing Manager at Reconnect Rochester. “Nationwide 40% of car trips are less than 2 miles with 28% less than one mile. Leaving your car at home may be easier than the average person realizes. Many people (including a quarter of Rochester residents and 11% of Monroe County) get by every day without a car. We’re trying to inspire people to rethink what’s possible in their own travels.”

Reconnect Rochester is inviting people to track and report their non-driving miles for the week to show the collective impact of reducing miles driven. Those who sign up for the campaign will receive daily emails with guidance on how to get started and mini challenges to win prizes. Each day will have a theme to highlight different mobility options, including walking, biking, bus, and e-scooters. Participants are encouraged to choose the method that works best for their travel and schedule.

The local initiative is meant to highlight Reconnect Rochester’s broader messaging of “one less car trip” when moving throughout the county.Reducing reliance on driving can have a range of impacts, including lower transportation costs for households, reduced traffic congestion, and less demand for roadway and parking infrastructure. In addition, shifting some trips to transit, biking, or walking can support safer streets and more efficient use of community space.
