Rochester, NY - June 25, 2025
On June 22, 2025, at about 6:00 a.m., David Vazquez was in the rear of 24 Oscar St, an active location for drug
sales, when he became involved in a verbal altercation with a male later identified as 35-year-old Edison
Estremera-Cohen. During the course of the argument, Estremera-Cohen shot David Vazquez multiple times at
point-blank range. After the shooting, Estremera-Cohen stole Vazquez's money and fled the scene on a bicycle.
Vazquez was not found behind the house until about 7:00 a.m., and he was clearly deceased.
During the preliminary investigation, Major Crimes Detectives developed a suspect description. Around 11:30
a.m. Detectives received information from a citizen that the murder suspect was currently riding a BMX-style
bicycle in the 1000 block of N. Clinton Ave. The citizen was able to provide a clothing description and further
advised that the suspect was still armed with a handgun. As this information was being broadcast, Rochester
Police Officers in a two-man patrol vehicle on N. Clinton Ave. received a walk-up from a citizen providing the
same information pertaining to the suspect that the detectives had just received.
Those officers observed the suspect, Edison Estremera-Cohen, matching the description provided to them while
riding a bicycle south on the east sidewalk of N. Clinton Ave. near the intersection of Laforce St. Upon seeing the
officers, the suspect jumped off the bike and began to run northbound along the sidewalk. Both officers pursued
Estremera-Cohen on foot. As they got to the intersection of Mead St., a third officer joined the foot pursuit.
At the southeast corner of the intersection, the third officer made contact with Estremera-Cohen, knocking him to
the ground. While still on his feet and simultaneous to the third officer making contact with him, Estremera-
Cohen raised his arm and fired his 9mm handgun at the officer. At the time the weapon was fired, it was inches
away from the officer's head. After the shot was fired, as a result of the contact from the third officer, Estremera-
Cohen momentarily fell to the ground but maintained possession of the handgun. He jumped up to continue
running. As the contact officer went to tackle Estremera-Cohen, he was still holding the handgun. As the contact
officer was re-engaging, Estremera-Cohen turned toward the officers with the gun. One of the initial pursuing
officers was able to shoot the suspect three times, all three shots struck Estremera-Cohen in the upper body,
ending the threat to all officers. Only after Estremera-Cohen was shot did the gun fall from his hand.
Although the officer was not struck by the gunshot fired by Estremera-Cohen, he suffered injuries to his head and ear from the gun's muzzle flash.
