ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rallies took place Thursday afternoon across the Rochester area and the country to oppose federal cuts to Medicaid and food assistance under the Trump administration.
Hundreds of “Good Trouble Lives On” rallies are planned across all 50 states. The name recognizes the phrase “Good Trouble”, coined by late civil rights activist and Congressman John Lewis to describe his approach to taking non-violent action to challenge injustice. Thursday marks five years since Lewis’ death.
Organizers say the protests aim to “respond to the attacks on our civil and human rights by the Trump administration.” There were at least six rallies in our area, including one in Highland Park.
One protestor, Bobby Sherwood, said they were out there for John Lewis, who they say “will tell the truth.”
Another protestor, Erica Silloway, discussed who she was out there for.
“I’m out here for my kids, I’m out here for women, I’m out here for people of color, I’m out here for people that can’t be out here, people losing their Medicaid, ice raids, all of it. I cannot tolerate an administration that is trying to rip our country apart,” said Silloway.
