Local Sorority Hosts Water Safety Event
In partnership with USA Swimming, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Incorporated hosts Swim1922 to educate and support our community on the importance of water safety and reduce fear and apprehension regarding swimming.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., Theta Omega Sigma Chapter's annual water safety event will take place on Saturday, May 6, 2023 from 1 p.m. - 5 p.m. at Maplewood YMCA, 15 Driving Park, Rochester, New York 14613.
“The goal of this program is to help break down barriers and expand the footprint of Swim1922 in the local community by increasing swimming participation and decreasing drawing rates," said Bridgette Jones Waters, chapter president. “Our chapter is excited to offer this free event that was made possible by our sponsors Maplewood YMCA, Jersey Mike's -Gates, Deep End Swim & Sportswear, and Irondequoit Rotary Club.”
According to the CDC, approximately 10 people drown every day in the US. An even more startling fact is that 70% of African American children and 60% of Hispanic children in the US today do not know how to swim. This partnership with Sigma Gamma Rho is a groundbreaking initiative that seeks to strengthen USA Swimming's commitment to diversity and inclusion.
The event will include the following:
Swim lessons for youth and adults
Safety lesson for frozen bodies of water (e.g. lakes) and running in and around pools
Arts & crafts and intramurals
