Rochester, NY- On Wednesday, January 28, 2026, New York State Supreme Court Justice Alex Renzi sentenced 29-year-old Lakwan Hannah to 34 years to Life in the New York State Department of Corrections. He previously pled guilty to two counts of Murder in the 2nd Degree for killing Jared Perry and Marquis Chambers.
At approximately 1:35 AM on May 4, 2024, Rochester Police Officers were called to Lyell Avenue in the City of Rochester for reports of shots fired. Upon their arrival, 31-year-old Marquis Chambers was located on the porch and 29-year-old Jared Perry was located inside the house. Both men were fatally shot and pronounced dead at the scene.
After a thorough investigation, Rochester Police Detectives determined that Lakwan Hannah was responsible for both murders. Evidence showed that he drove to the house on Lyell Avenue, exited his car, and opened fire at multiple people who were sitting on the front porch, killing Marquis Chambers and injuring a second individual. He then proceeded inside the house, where he chased down and killed Jared Perry. Lakwan Hannah was on probation at the time of the homicides. Shortly following the murders, the defendant fled New York State.
In January, 2025, Lakwan Hannah was arrested on various charges in Euless, Texas. The Rochester Police Department along with the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office worked with Texas authorities to bring him back to New York State to face murder charges in Monroe County.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Patrick Gallagher, Chief of the Domestic Violence Bureau, and Senior Assistant District Attorney Mikael Pelkey, of the Special Victims Unit.
“Lakwan Hannah betrayed someone who he knew to be a friend,” said Assistant District Attorney Patrick Gallagher. “What began as a minor dispute escalated into horrific violence when the defendant drove to Lyell Avenue and fired into a group of people gathered on a porch, killing Marquis Chambers and wounding another individual. He then entered the home where children were present, and fatally shot Jared Perry. This was a deliberate act that has permanently shattered two families. Jared and Marquis were sons, brothers, and fathers, and their children now face a future without them. While nothing can undo this loss, I hope today’s sentence brings some sense of justice and closure to their loved ones.”
“Lakwan Hannah was already under court supervision when he murdered Jared Perry and Marquis Chambers,” said Monroe County District Attorney Brian Green. “If he had followed the conditions of his probation, he would not have had access to a firearm or the opportunity to carry out this disturbing act of violence. I am grateful to the Rochester Police Department for their relentless work in identifying the defendant, locating him out of state, and ensuring he was returned to Monroe County to face justice. I also want to recognize the strength and cooperation of the families and friends of Jared Perry and Marquis Chambers throughout this incredibly painful process.”
