Clifford Florence Sr. Launches Write-In Campaign for Rochester Mayor

Minister Clifford A. Florence Sr., son of the late civil rights leader Rev. Franklin Florence, has officially launched a write-in campaign for mayor of Rochester, positioning himself as a community-driven alternative in the 2025 mayoral race.

Florence announced his campaign during a public event held Oct. 14 at Inner Faith Gospel Tabernacle, 601 Jay St., where supporters gathered to hear his message of equity, accountability, and grassroots empowerment. The gathering also served to recruit volunteers, raise funds, and mobilize faith-based and neighborhood support ahead of the Nov. 4 general election.

“I’m standing for the people who’ve been left out and left behind,” Florence told attendees, calling his campaign “a movement for truth, justice, and transparency in city government.”

Florence’s bid comes after a contentious primary season in which he was removed from the Democratic ballot following challenges from Monroe County Democratic leadership. He and his supporters have described the decision as discriminatory and politically motivated, saying it reflects systemic barriers that deter independent and grassroots candidates from participating fully in the electoral process.

Despite the setback, Florence vowed to remain in the race, encouraging voters to write his name on the ballot in November. His platform emphasizes addressing poverty, youth violence, housing inequities, and restoring trust between residents and city hall.

While incumbent Mayor Malik Evans is presumed to win the general election after his decisive win over Rochester City Councilmember Mary Lupien and businessman Shashi Sinha in the democratic June 24 Democratic primary, Florence’s campaign aims to mobilize residents who feel overlooked by mainstream political structures.

“Our city deserves leadership that comes from the community, not just the party,” Florence told attendees.

The general election is scheduled for Nov. 4, 2025.
