Mayor’s Inauguration Youth Forum. January, 2026.

Rochester, NY - As he begins his second term in office, Mayor Malik D. Evans brought together local youth and community leaders in an engaging evening of discussion about the future of Rochester and issues affecting the lives of young people.

The lively and fruitful conversation included more than 50 young people ages 13 to 19, and community leaders including Mayor Evans, Commissioner of the City’s Department of Recreation and Human Services Dr. Shirley Green, and Rochester City School District (RCSD) Superintendent Dr. Eric Jay Rosser.

Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council Vice President West Cuyler moderated the discussion that explored topics such as what leaders are doing to support the health and wellbeing of young people, how youth can find opportunities to lead and advocate for their needs, their vision for our community, and how all of Rochester can work together toward a safe and prosperous future.

Panel discussion highlights included:

  • “Mental health is our number one issue, because without that, we can’t achieve other goals from reducing gun violence to encouraging education,” said Mayor Malik D. Evans.

  • “We want to give youth opportunities, so that you can choose what pathways you want in life,” said Dr. Shirley Green. “To that end, we invest in the spaces where our youth spend time and plan programs that can give young people new experiences.”

  • "Rochester’s students inspire us every day with their curiosity, creativity, and determination,” said Dr. Eric Jay Rosser, Superintendent of Schools. “As we move through 2026, our focus remains on ensuring every young person has access to high-quality learning experiences, strong support systems, and opportunities to maximize their full potential. Together, we can help every child thrive in school and in life."

“This Youth Forum was held in a single evening, but the conversation doesn’t stop here,” said Mayor Evans. “I encourage every young person at the event and across our city to speak up and join in the collective work of moving Rochester forward.”
