Canton Street Shooting Arrest

Rochester, NY - On August 7, around 7:40pm, Officers responded to a house on Canton Street for the report of a male shot. Officers located a male in his 20s suffering from a significant gunshot wound to the lower body and quickly applied a tourniquet. The victim was transported to Strong Hospital for further treatment of a no longer life- threatening wound.
The preliminary investigation found that 41-year old Sergio Ponder Sr. allegedly shot the victim, a family member, during an argument. Yesterday, the New York State Police conducted a traffic stop in the 300 block of Avenue D and safely took Ponder into custody. During the arrest, an extended magazine was located, which was loaded with 27 rounds of .22 caliber ammunition. Ponder was transported to the Monroe County Jail and is expected to be arraigned this morning in Rochester City Court.
Sergio Ponder Sr., age 41, is charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2nd Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 3rd Degree, and Assault in the 2nd Degree.
