Rochester, NY- On Wednesday, October 22, 2025, 37-year-old Brandon Decapua was sentenced by New York State Supreme Court Justice Renzi to 38 years in the New York State Department of Corrections. The defendant was previously convicted by a Monroe County jury of Burglary in the 1st Degree as a Sexually Motivated Felony, three counts of Sexual Abuse in the 1st Degree, three counts of Attempted Rape in the 1st Degree, and Public Lewdness for two separate incidents at the University of Rochester campus on January 17, 2025.

On January 17, 2025, around 11:00AM, a 22-year-old student called Officers from the University of Rochester Public Safety Department after she was sexually harassed in a library on campus. A man exposed himself to the student, then chased her around a table while gratifying himself. The suspect ran away before the arrival of the peace officers.

Approximately three hours later, an 18-year-old student flagged down patrolling University of Rochester Public Safety Department Officers, bleeding and distraught. The same offender located this student at the Genesee Residence Hall, where he sexually assaulted the victim and attempted to violently rape her. The victim fought off the assailant and ran outside to find help.

The defendant was located walking on campus within minutes of the victim’s report to the University of Rochester Public Safety Department. He was identified as Brandon Decapua, a Level 3 Sexual Offender on federal post-release supervision. The defendant was not affiliated with the University of Rochester.

This case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Sara Vanstrydonck, Chief of the Special Victims Unit.

“Brandon Decapua’s sentence sends a clear and powerful message that those who commit acts of sexual violence will be held accountable for the harm they cause,” said Assistant District Attorney Sara Vanstrydonck. “His actions were predatory, violent, and terrifying, and his 38-year sentence reflects the gravity of those crimes. This outcome was made possible by the extraordinary courage of the survivors who came forward, faced their assailant in court, and testified about their traumatic assaults. Their strength not only secured justice in this case but also protects our community from further harm. I hope today’s sentence brings them a measure of healing and reassurance that their voices made a difference.”

“Today’s sentence is a testament to the extraordinary strength and courage of the two survivors who came forward, faced their attacker, and demanded justice,” said Monroe County District Attorney Brian Green. “Today’s lengthy and appropriate sentence ensures that Brandon Decapua will no longer have the opportunity to prey on others. This case underscores the importance of survivors coming forward. I commend the bravery of these two young women and the swift, coordinated work of University of Rochester Public Safety and the Rochester Police Department. Because of their courage and collaboration, a dangerous offender has been removed from our community, and will spend the next 38 years in the New York State Department of Corrections.”
