UPDATED (Dec. 22, 2025): This story has been updated to include the identification of the suspect, additional details about officer injuries, and information released by police regarding prior threats and an active arrest warrant.
Three Rochester police officers were shot and wounded, and a suspect with a history of domestic violence threats was killed after a domestic disturbance call escalated into gunfire late Friday night, police said.
The suspect was identified Monday as Eric Davis, 38, a Rochester resident who had an active arrest warrant for aggravated harassment and was the subject of an order of protection stemming from earlier threats against the female victim, according to the Rochester Police Department.
Police responded about 10:15 p.m. Friday to a report of a man attempting to break into a woman’s home in the 600 block of Chili Avenue in the city’s 19th Ward. The caller reported the woman’s ex-boyfriend was trying to enter the home and possibly had a gun. He also told dispatchers he legally possessed a firearm.
When officers arrived, Davis immediately opened fire at close range, striking two officers and the civilian who had called 911, police said. An exchange of gunfire followed before Davis fled the scene.
Minutes later, officers located Davis near the intersection of Thurston Road and Arnett Boulevard. Police said Davis again opened fire, striking a third officer. Officers returned fire, fatally shooting Davis. Despite lifesaving efforts at the scene, he was pronounced dead, authorities said.
Police said ballistic evidence indicates Davis fired at least seven shots across both locations, striking three officers and the civilian victim. He was found illegally possessing a .40-caliber Glock handgun that had been fired until it ran out of ammunition, according to investigators.
A fourth officer fired at the suspect during the incident and has been temporarily placed on administrative assignment, consistent with department policy. She was not injured.
All three wounded officers were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital. One officer, who has been with the department for about 1½ years, was discharged Sunday. The other two officers, both seven-year veterans, have undergone multiple surgeries and remain hospitalized, police said.
The civilian victim was struck multiple times in the upper body and remains hospitalized with serious injuries. The female victim involved in the domestic incident was not physically injured.
Police said Davis’ arrest warrant stemmed from an October incident in which he allegedly threatened the woman. That incident followed an earlier July encounter in which Davis allegedly threatened to kill her, leading to the issuance of an order of protection. His criminal history includes a 2005 burglary conviction.
Mayor Malik Evans called the shooting “our biggest nightmare” and asked the community to keep the injured officers and their families in their thoughts.
The Monroe County District Attorney’s Office, the New York State Attorney General’s Office, and the Rochester Police Department’s Professional Standards Section are conducting parallel investigations. Body-worn camera footage is expected to be released once investigators determine it is appropriate, police said.
Authorities said there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
