3 Rochester Police Officers Shot, Suspect Dead After Domestic Call

Three Rochester police officers were hospitalized with gunshot wounds in Rochester, NY

Three Rochester police officers were hospitalized with gunshot wounds and a suspect was killed after a domestic dispute response Friday night escalated into violence, authorities said.

Police responded about 10:15 p.m. Friday to a report of a man attempting to break into a woman’s home on Chili Avenue in the city’s 19th Ward with a possible firearm, Rochester Police Chief David Smith said at a news conference Saturday. The caller also told dispatchers he had a legally owned firearm.

When officers arrived, the suspect opened fire “without warning at close range,” striking two officers, Smith said. An exchange of gunfire followed, during which the man who called police was also wounded.

The suspect fled on foot but was located a few blocks away at Thurston Road and Arnett Boulevard. He shot a third officer, and responding officers returned fire, fatally shooting the suspect, Smith said.

All three officers were taken to Strong Memorial Hospital. One officer is in critical but stable condition, another is in serious condition, and the third is recovering from less severe injuries, Smith said. The man who originally called 911 is hospitalized in serious but non-life-threatening condition.

Police have not released the names of the officers, the suspect or the civilian wounded in the shooting. Investigators from the Monroe County District Attorney’s office, the New York State Attorney General’s office and the Rochester Police Department’s Professional Standards Section are assisting in the ongoing investigation.

Nearby resident Kenneth Jackson described the scene Friday night as chaotic, with multiple gunshots and police cars responding. “It was a pretty hectic scene,” he said.

Mayor Malik Evans, speaking at the scene, called the shooting “our biggest nightmare” and asked the community to keep the officers and their families in their thoughts.

No further threats to public safety were reported, and police said the incident appears isolated. Officials urged anyone with information to contact investigators.
