Joseph Avenue Shooting Arrest

On June 27, around 10:30pm, Officers responded to the 700 block of Joseph Avenue for a ShotSpotter activation indicating multiple rounds fired. Officers located a male, in his 30s, suffering from at least one gunshot wound to the lower body. He was transported to Strong Hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Section’s Non-Fatal Shooting team worked diligently to identify 49- year old Shermell Prather as the suspected shooter. Yesterday, the United States Marshal’s Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force located Prather in the 600 block of Joseph Avenue and safely took him into custody. He was transported to the Monroe County Jail and arraigned in Rochester City Court.
Shermell Prather, age 49, is charged with Assault in the 2nd Degree, two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2nd Degree, one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 3rd Degree, and Criminal Use of a Firearm in the 2nd Degree.
