Rochester, NY- On Monday, November 17, 2025, 26-year-old Namari Starling was convicted by a Monroe County jury of Kidnapping in the 2nd Degree, Strangulation in the 2nd Degree, two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2nd Degree, and Reckless Endangerment in the 2nd Degree.
On the morning of March 4, 2025, a 26-year-old woman was kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend, restrained, and held at gunpoint. She managed to escape and ran down the street barefoot, where a good Samaritan assisted her in calling the police. Rochester Police Officers arrived to the scene of the kidnapping, where the suspect also shot at the victim from the balcony.
After a seven-hour standoff with the Rochester Police Department and the SWAT Unit, Namari Starling was arrested. Upon his arrest, a loaded, illegal handgun was located inside the residence.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Patrick Gallagher, Chief of the Domestic Violence Bureau and Assistant District Attorney Armando Benitez, of the Special Victims Unit.
“Namari Starling not only held his ex-girlfriend at gunpoint against her will, but also strangled her and shot at her in broad daylight,” said Assistant District Attorney Patrick Gallagher. “Despite experiencing a terrifying, life-threatening trauma, this survivor exemplified strength in cooperating with the investigation and testifying against her assailant. Because of her determination and fortitude and the heroic efforts by the Rochester Police Department, Namari Starling was convicted of these violent offenses.”
“Namari Starling’s actions were brazen, violent, and posed an immediate threat to the survivor and to the community,” said Monroe County District Attorney Brian Green. “Thanks to the victim’s extraordinary courage and the decisive response of the Rochester Police Department, a dangerous individual was stopped before he could do even more harm.
