Mayor Evans: Area Health Systems Stepping up to Fill Void After Walgreens Closures
In light of the recent closure of the Walgreens pharmacy location on West Main Street, near Genesee Street, Mayor Malik Evans says the area’s healthcare partners are stepping up to fill the void.
Evans says Rochester Regional Health, University of Rochester Medical Center, Jordan Health Center, and Trillium Health are actively investing in the City of Rochester and making a united effort to ensure residents continue to have access to essential pharmacy services.
“In this moment of a national chain’s disinvestment, community leaders in Rochester stepped forward, as they have so many times before,” Evans said. “Rather than viewing the closure as a setback, they saw it as an opportunity to rally together, leveraging their collective vision and resilience.”
The University of Rochester Medical Center has expanded its footprint by opening the new Highland Pharmacy at Brooks Landing, located near the corner of Genesee Street and Brooks Avenue. The pharmacy already fills approximately 275 prescriptions daily, offering both delivery and convenient pickup services. The new location aims to enhance access to essential medications and provide personalized service, catering to the needs of residents in the surrounding neighborhoods. The Highland South Wedge Pharmacy at 777 South Clinton Ave. also provides convenient pick-up and free delivery of medications to surrounding neighborhoods. Both walk-in pharmacies serve patients regardless of where they live or receive medical care.
Evans says Rochester Regional Health’s St. Mary’s Campus, the city’s longest-running medical facility, continues to demonstrate its dedication to the residents of southwest Rochester. As part of its renewed commitment, representatives have expressed enthusiasm about playing a pivotal role in revitalizing the Bulls Head neighborhood. The facility is poised to be a pillar in the community’s resurgence, supporting both medical needs and broader development efforts, as it has done for generations.
Trillium Health offers inclusive pharmacy services, and has programs to ensuring that everyone, regardless of their ability to pay, receives the care they need. They offer two pharmacy locations in Rochester, at 259 Monroe Avenue and 170 Science Parkway, providing a full range of prescription medications, personalized consultations, and supportive care for the community.
Jordan Health’s mission for the last 100 years has been to ensure everyone has access to high-quality care regardless of their ability to pay. This mission also includes access to resources including prescribed medications. Jordan Health opened its new pharmacy at 82 Holland Street with a goal of providing convenience for patients, employees, and the general public to obtain the prescribed medications needed to maintain their health or improve their health outcomes.
“These organizations are pillars of our community,” Evans said. “They have demonstrated the spirit of a city that thrives on collaboration, innovation, and the determination to build solutions that truly serve the needs of its people.”
