Sickle Cell Awareness Event and Blood Drive at School Without Walls

Who: School Without Walls students American Red Cross

What: Sickle Cell Awareness Event and Blood Drive

When: Wednesday, February 4, 2026, 4 p.m.

Where: School Without Walls, 480 Broadway, Rochester, NY 14607

Details: School Without Walls will host its fourth annual Sickle Cell Awareness Event and American Red Cross Blood Drive on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, continuing a student-led effort to raise awareness about sickle cell disease and help address the ongoing national blood shortage.

The event was created to honor a School Without Walls staff member who lost two of three sons to sickle cell disease. Since its inception, the event has focused on education, advocacy, and increasing blood donations that are critical for people living with the disease.

Sickle cell disease disproportionately affects African Americans, and blood compatibility plays a critical role in treatment. Approximately one in three African Americans is a compatible match for individuals with sickle cell disease, many of whom require frequent blood transfusions throughout their lives. Proceeds from the event support the American Red Cross and its sickle cell initiative, which works to increase donor participation and access to lifesaving blood.

The Red Cross Blood Drive will run from 1 to 7 p.m., with walk-ins welcome. Community members may also schedule appointments in advance. The school aims to collect at least 19 units of blood, building on last year’s total of 24 units collected.

From 4 to 7 p.m., the event will also feature a Sickle Cell Awareness program with student presentations, medical experts, and local organizations sharing information on the impact of sickle cell disease and recent advances in treatment. Attendees may browse and purchase handmade student artwork, crafts, and baked goods.

All proceeds raised during the event will be donated to the American Red Cross.

The event is open to the public, and community members are encouraged to attend, donate blood, and support student leadership.
