At about 9:00 pm on December 4, 2024, officers were called to 139 Orange St. after a resident found 92-year- old Velma Leake clearly deceased. Leake lived at the residence with other family members. One of the residents was sleeping upstairs. They woke, went downstairs and found Leake had been mauled by the pit bull. It appears the dog is owned by the Residents.
It is unknown at this time if Leake died as a result of the mauling, or was mauled after she died from other causes. Rochester Police Major Crimes Section is working with the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death.
The dog is currently being held at the City’s Animal Services Shelter pending further Investigation.
The Major Crimes Section is conducting the investigation and is asking anybody with information call 911, the Major Crimes Section @ 585-428-7157, Crime Stoppers @ 585- 423-9300, or email MajorCrimes@cityofrochester.gov.
