Rochester, NY – July 2, 2026 – The Community Justice Initiative (CJI) is proud to announce the upcoming Austin Steward Day, a community celebration honoring the profound legacy of Austin Steward—an African-American abolitionist, educator, businessman, and pioneer who played a vital role in Rochester’s history.
Following the success of Malcolm X Weekend, Austin Steward Day will be held on Thursday, July 2, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 6:45 PM at the Arnett Library, located at 310 Arnett Blvd, Rochester, NY 14619. This is the 5th installment of this event!!!!
This event serves as a call to action for education, culture, and economic empowerment. Austin Steward’s life as a landowner and activist remains a blueprint for mutual aid and community self-determination today.
“We are honoring the abolitionist, economic, and freedom legacy of a man who helped build this city,” said Diallo Payne, CJI Member. “We invite all residents to join us in paying reverence to this pioneer.”
CJI is currently seeking vendors, performers, and speakers to participate in the event. Local businesses and community voices interested in being part of this celebration are encouraged to reach out.
