City Seeks Mechanics at All Career Stages to Build a Future in Rochester

Rochester, NY - Mayor Evans and the City of Rochester today announced a new recruitment effort to attract mechanics to careers with the City’s Department of Environmental Services (DES), positions that play a significant role in keeping the city running each day. The campaign is designed to raise awareness of excellent career opportunities in equipment services and highlight the meaningful, hands on work delivered by City service technicians.

Every day, Rochester relies on a fleet of vehicles and equipment to deliver critical services, including snow removal, street maintenance, recycling collection, and public safety support. DES mechanics are responsible for maintaining and repairing that fleet, ensuring services are delivered safely and reliably in every season.

“This campaign is about showing people the real impact of this work and the opportunities it creates,” said Mayor Malik D. Evans. “Our mechanics are the crew behind the scenes who keep Rochester moving. If you’re looking for a career where you can build skills, work with your hands and make a difference each day, this is that opportunity.”

The City is actively hiring for multiple positions across experience levels, including garage attendant, automotive aide, heavy mechanic, master automotive technician, master truck technician, and senior automotive maintenance mechanic. The effort aims to build a strong talent pipeline, from entry-level candidates to experienced technicians.

“This is a great opportunity for anyone looking to start fresh or take the next step in their career,” said Kabutey Ocansey, the City’s Commissioner of Environmental Services. “We have a strong team in place and are looking for individuals who are ready to learn, contribute, and grow with us. There has never been a better time to join the City’s workforce.”

The City of Rochester offers strong benefits, including health, dental and vision coverage, retirement and pension options, paid time off, and opportunities for advancement and training. Applications will be accepted until all positions are filled.
