Rochester, NY — Akimbo Books, a beloved independent bookstore known for its carefully curated selection and commitment to small press literature, has announced that this will be its final holiday season. Since opening in 2022, Akimbo has become a vibrant literary hub in Rochester, New York — hosting readings, community events, and championing books that inspire empathy, imagination, and social change.
“It’s bittersweet to say goodbye,” said founder and owner Rachel Crawford. “Akimbo has been more than a bookstore, it’s been a space for connection, community care, and dialogue. I’m grateful to everyone who has supported us, from our loyal readers and community partners to the incredible authors and presses who have trusted us with their work.”
The store will remain open through the end of the holiday season, giving readers one last chance to visit, browse, and celebrate Akimbo’s distinctive collection of new and small press titles. Crawford encourages the community to stop by, share memories on their online platforms, and keep the shop in Rochester’s memory as a place of resistance and togetherness.
While the bookstore chapter is closing, Crawford’s literary, nonprofit, and academic work around decarceral work will continue. “The spirit of human-rights-focused work that builds access to books, literacy, and creative expression is my life’s work and will be integral to my next chapter.”
“Akimbo may be closing its doors, but we will continue to do pop-ups and you’ll still be able to support us online,” Crawford said. “The conversations and connections that started here will continue to grow in new ways.”
