The level of tobacco consumption continues to decline, according to a report published on Tuesday by the World Health Organization. According to WHO, there are 1 billion 250 million adult smokers in the world today.
"We have 19 million fewer smokers today than two years ago. This is the first time we have seen such a decrease," notes Rüdiger Krech, Director of the WHO Department of Health Promotion.
The highest rates are in Southeast Asia, where more than a quarter of the population smokes, followed by Europe. WHO calls on countries to continue implementing tobacco control policies and tobacco industry interventions.
"The region that is a problem is Europe. In some countries, either the number of smokers among women is growing, or it remains at a very high level overall," warns Krech.
