James Winston

James W. Winston


James Winston is Assistant to the President for Workforce Development at Monroe Community College (MCC) in Rochester, New York. He oversees the workforce and economic development activities of the college. In this role, James works to ensure that MCC provides local and regional businesses with the types of education/training programs their workforce requires to stay competitive. He also represents the college in the area of community and government relations.

Prior to coming to MCC, James was Manager of Workforce Development for Monroe County. There he coordinated the Monroe County Manufacturing Partnership, an economic development consortium of city/county public schools, colleges, manufacturers, trade associations and local/state governments. James has managed various training programs in the private sector, including Xerox and Delphi (formerly Rochester Products). He has directed an alternative school for young adults, supervised programs at a detention center and was president of a local not-for-profit agency. He has also held human resource management positions at General Motors and Xerox.

James has B.S. (Political Science) and M.P.A. degrees from the State University of New York at Brockport. He has attended a large array of professional development programs and seminars including the Principals' Institute at Harvard.

James serves on the Rochester/Monroe County Workforce Investment Board (WIB), Empire Zone Board (City of Rochester), Monroe County School-Business Partnership, Rochester Institute of Technology International Advisory for Multi-Disciplinary Studies and has served on several Rochester City School District advisory committees. He is a member of the Sigma Pi Phi fraternity.

James has devoted his life to improving both the performance of emerging workers (youth) and adults and the overall effectiveness of organizations and partnerships. James lives in Henrietta and is married to Lillie and has two grown sons and three grandchildren.
